Caldermeade Farm

"Never been here before but will definitely be back with the family"…Sonya and Alan.

Caldermeade Farm is a commercial dairy farm milking 350-400 dairy cows. It's pasture based with cows being fed extra grain and minerals in the dairy. When there is not enough pasture the cows are fed additional hay and silage mixed with grain or other by products either on the feed pad (west side of the dairy) or in the paddocks on the ground.

A centre pivot irrigator using underground water irrigates around 50 hectares of pasture to extend the growing season when rainfall is insufficient. Cows like green grass best of all!

Caldermeade Farm harvests excess pasture in Spring and stores it as hay or silage (in bunkers behind the dairy). There is land rented away from the dairy where young cattle and extra fodder is conserved. Crops, especially maize, are also grown to ensure adequate feed for the cows.

Cows calve once per year in autumn and after 8 weeks rest, produce about 25 litres of milk per day. More information about the farm can be read on the Circle of Life page
